Should Nintendo make the Sonic games?

If there is one thing Nintendo delivers on, its its FRANCHISES. Mario and Zelda, the two most critically acclaimed series of all time, continue to deliver excellence, year after year, decade after decade. Due to Nintendo's inability to play well with others, franchises have made Nintendo the 900 pound gorilla (no, not that one) they are today.

Now head over to ign.com and see the sonic and the black knight review. It shows the old Elvis: someone who made it big and has slowly faded away into obscurity. Sonic, who was just as great as Mario from 1991-1994, could of been the king of video games. Instead, he suffered from cruel parents, and now is regarded as a has-been. Mario, however, still has success: his lasted addition, Super Mario Galaxy, has sold 9 million copies worldwide, and by the end of this generation could become the best-selling 3D platformer of all time, a title he already holds. But imagine if Sega bit the dust and Nintendo took the reigns. What if Sega's brainchild became the next big hit from Shigeru Miyamoto?

There are two different sides to this idea. One is Sonic has always been Sega's thing and should stay with Sega till the end. Another is that Nintendo has shown that it is far more capable with delivering with franchises and that the only way for Sonic to make it back to his glory days is to jump ship to the Mario stronghold.

I personally think that Nintendo could pull some excellent gameplay out of a series that is now on life support. A new Sonic division could be established, albiet a secondary project to Mario and Zelda releases, much like Kirby and Donkey Kong are today. And for those who argue, let these do all the talking:

No Sonic sucks and shouldn't have left the 2D era, the end.

Nah, I rather stick with the Mario and Zelda franchise to play with rather than see Sonic in red color with "Nintendo" written on his belly.

Sonic should stay with SEGA, though SEGA should find a better way to make Sonic games.

I don't believe Nintendo should take over the Sonic games completely because they're probably not as knowledgeable as SEGA in what makes SEGA's star character "Sonic". Instead of handing over the games to Nintendo, SEGA and Nintendo should try collaborating on the games together. A joint project if you will where both sides exchange ideas and implement the ones they feel will work.

We should at least let SEGA keep some of their reputation. If we get rid of Sonic, they're gone.

Ninjatiamat is on a distinguished road

I think the best course of action for SEGA is to make Sonic a 2-D centric franchise, a la Castlevania. Even Sonic Adventure wasn't as good as his Genesis adventures.

Possibly Nintendo could work in collaboration with Sega to release a 2D Sonic for Wiiware, with downloadable levels, leaderboards, speed run ghost data and a level editor, if that's what you are saying

Honestly, I don't think that Nintendo should take over the Sonic series. Sega should just stick to 2-D games, and possibly release more on the DS. There could be a Sonic Advance 4 (It's possible) . I really hope they make more 2-D games, maybe they'll actually have a chance of being good if Sega does. Sonic is Sega's mascot after all, it's unlikely that Sega would give up on Sonic and hand him over.
