ATTN TEACHERS!: Video Game Lesson Plan

How about going to school,
and instead of opening your freakn text books to page 69....

Why not head to your nearest TV cubicle, laptop, DS(i), Gameboy,
and play Civilization, Tetris, Roller Coaster Tycoon, Final Fantasy
instead???

Or better yet just talk on a networking site like this (NFF)
all day long???

Think it's all just a dream? Think it would never happen?

Well.....

It's not that far off a dream as of this year......

http://www.nypost.com/seven/03162009...lay_159753.htm

Student-gamers in Manhattan, New York;
will be living it up in a local Public School
experimenting with the so-called "video game lesson plan"....

That's right,
students would be able to play an Xbox 360 (Other consoles YTB),
PC Game, Gameboy, DS(i) in the comfort of their own classroom....

And the teacher most likely to base their progress by how far they
advance in their "gaming" and "networking" skills.....

But this course is not for the faint of heart, or just for any student....

Its mainly aimed at Science and Tech whizz students, with high IQs....
geared for them since they are bored in the regular curriculum class room.

Prepping their math, science, research, and analog skills thru gaming.

If this lone public school sees success.....
most likely the district, then the state, then the region, (crosses fingers)
then the entire nation would take this up as a serious extracurricular
and regular, class curriculum.

Would you like this to be taken up at your school, seriously?

Rockn.

If it weren't for those boring lessons, I wouldn't love academia like I do today. Pain and perseverance turn into positive attributes.

Saying that, I was reading in a new paper just today that they were thinking of changing the school curriculum for schools to optionally exclude subjects like Queen Elizabeth I& World War II to favour subjects like Networking Sites and the advance of modern technology.

Personally, and this opinion is unjust, but it seems like they are dumbing down.

It doesn't make much sense to have gaming classes at school, and get grades based on how good you do. Don't get me wrong, it would be cool for students, but if i was a parent and all my child does all day at school is play videogames, I would be pissed.
There nothing of Much value being taught.
But i'd probably learn more there then my crappy school lol

I can see many positives to this, and as a teacher who loves video games, this excites me. I already include some lessons based on media literacy and social networking, and the kids love them. Furthermore, they're relevant to the lives of the current generation.

However, the reality is that this would never fly. At least, not in the next ten years. How would deaf and/or blind students play these video games? What about students who are unable to grasp a controller because of a deformity in their hand, or another disability related to motor skills? What about kids who have severe motion sickness or are prone to seizures?

Sure, with alternate controllers and other modifications, it IS possible to bring video games to almost all students, but to create these modifications, we need sound research, time to develop and distribute, and training for teachers on how to use the new equipment and training for teachers on how to assess student learning. These things take several years. At least five to create video games for students who are not gifted and talented. At least ten to implement on a large scale.

So probably all of you will be out of school by the time this ever happens.

*shrug* WWII is a pretty major event in 20th century history. The three main history subjects I remember from History class are WWII, King Henry VIII and the Black Plague. Maybe it's an intregral part to British History?
