University & College: The Aftermath

The last school of education, the British University & the American College/University.

You go to these to attain the primary level of education, a degree. From there you can go onto doing a Masters Degree (MA) and a Philosophy Degree (Ph.D)

I was talking to my Dad about this though, where really does a degree with some choices go beyond the job of 'teaching'? I have friends who do degrees in Philosophy, Drama & Dance, Midwifery, Embroidery, Art etc. and without trying to sound dismissive, I don't know what they could do with it.

I argued the point that in the UK anyway, the Goverment are encouraging students to go to University by giving out interest free loans, bursaries, and more incentives to go which means more students do go and what was once a honoured title, the Degree is slowly becoming more common. (wow, long sentence) So it's nessercary for people to attain these to keep up with everybody else.

But is it that simple? I can understand with some subjects have quite clear jobs in mind, like Maths (Banking), Languages (Translator), Science (Scientist) etc. but with some other subjects like the ones I mentioned.. there is no job that can support you as a Philosopher or a clothmaker, and very few jobs cater for Midwives and Artists.

Are these courses simply here to cater for people to attain degrees to keep up with the standard of education, or is there more to it I don't see?

If everyone went to college who would be the janitors of our world. I say not everyone is destined for college.

college is not for everyone. Now in the UK, art was a great part of its history. maybe the government is trying not to lose that. America never really had that history.

... Lol, do you think a bunch of big name clothes company owners didn't go to college and get a degree in design?

Plus a degree in film increases your chance of becoming an actor or film maker. And it helps learn about that stuff.

Drama & Dance, also helps you become an actor.

Like Kryn said, college isn't for everyone. It just depends on what you want to be.

For the most part.. yeah. I think they got the experience needed rather than the qualifications need and worked their way up. Especially in the mid 20th century, maybe it's just be but I don't see that time of era to be an educated one, but an experienced one - which is just as important but understated as education.

Plus a degree in film increases your chance of becoming an actor or film maker. And it helps learn about that stuff.

The point of the thread I was trying to get across was where does that lead you? You enter higher education in hopes of a better job and higher job prospects. And some stuff like Acting and Dance? A family friend of ours is a professional soprano and only so much as volenteers at the theater company. I guess I'm worried people going into higher education, going into thousands of pounds into debt and asking themselves if the job they have really was worth it.

100% agreed. Just tell that to our pushy Goverment.

Well, It always increases your chances. Sure you have a chance without college, but it is always good to have a higher chance, right?

If they get a good job that pays well, then good for them. If not then they shouldn't give up looking for a good job.

I think you should go to University if you want to. I agree with Kryn, not everyone is destined for Uni. I personally however would love to go. I'd like to do a degree in theoretical astrophysics.
