Another New/Used Game Scam.

Quote:

Dodgy retail scams and dubious retail selling techniques are nothing new but in this industry you don’t expect them to find them nesting right in the middle of a respectable major retailer.

Commonly known as GAME, the company’s real name is The Game Group PLC, a UK based video games retail company. It’s listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index : in 2008 it had a revenue of £1,490 million and a net profit of £75 million.Their website proudly proclaims that ”We are Europe’s leading specialist retailer of PC and video game products with a chain of 1,348 outlets, operating stores in ten countries”.

The scam in question revolves around the confusion of game packaging. Whenever a consumer purchases a new game, they are legally entitled to expect it to be tightly encased in plastic. Packaging manufacturers go to great lengths to ensure opening the packaging is as difficult and tiresome as possible for obvious reasons. However, due to legitimate concerns about shoplifting, the retailers often open the packaging, remove the disk and store the game disks behind the counter. This is where the scams occurs : the new game is not the one given to the customer but rather a used version!

And how do I know this ? It happened right in front of my very own eyes to my own family! As we were all waiting for our plane at Gatwick airport, South terminal, we paid a visit to the duty free GAME store. My son noticed a special offer of 2 NEW Xbox 360 games for £30 pounds. After checking twice with the cashier that NEW actually meant new and not used, my son took the empty covers to the checkout and purchased the 2 new games. The cashier promptly opened the drawer and inserted the “new” games into the covers. Upon arriving in our destination, my son discovered the games were full of scratches and completely unplayable : the Xbox was not able to read the disk at all. Naturally, to take the disks back to the shop and complain was a little difficult as it would involve hopping on the plane back to England and then going back through customs : a factor obviously well known by the shop in question!

So watch out everyone : I have no idea how common this practice is but at least we now know why the used game market is such a profitable business!
Thoughts?

That doesn't sound like a mistake to me. They're not THAT incompetent with their merchandise. They know better than to throw an unworking disc into a new game case.

That's just them being greedy. No two ways about it.

Yeah I had that happen to me once! I fixed their butt though! Bought a new copy of megaman and brought it all the way home and then looked at the bottom and was like WTF? It was full of scratches and stains and other things.....T.T! So I took it back and showed the guy there and he was like oh that was brand new when we gave it to you! I when off like a bottle rocket right in the store!! And after a few minutes I said one thing that made my arguement add up to my favor! I said "I bought this 20 minutes ago and you are telling me that I did that kinda damage in 20 minutes??" So he started mumbling and gave me a new game and when i mean new he pulled it from the back still in the original packaging from the factory! So yeah you gotta watch out for gayfers that throw used games into new cases!
