AMD gaining on Intel

Well, look at that, AMD has managed some gains in the semiconductor market. According to IDC, the companyís share of the chip market hit 22.3 percent during the first quarter of 2009, an increase of 4.6 percent over the fourth quarter of 2008. Meanwhile, Intelís share fell to 77.3 percent, a decline of 4.7 percent.

It would appear that Intelís loss is, for the most part, AMDís gain. Intelís (INTC) shipments declined 16 percent while those of its rival increased 13 percent. Great news for AMD (AMD), which has been having a rough time of it lately with more than two fiscal years of losses and little sign of an upturn.

And what of the broader chip market? IDC says it remains weak, but believes a bottom may be in sight. Overall, shipments were down, but their rate of decline appears to be slowing. During the first quarter, world-wide shipments fell 10.9 percent from the fourth quarter of 2008. Thatís not nearly as bad as their 17 percent decline from the third quarter to fourth. So the good news here in that the bad news could have been worse. Says IDC: ďThe PC processor market is still in weak condition. While OEM demand picked up notably towards the end of the quarter and going into April, IDC is wary that the demand was due to OEMs replenishing their inventories rather than reflecting a return of solid end demand and return to market normalcy. IDC continues to expect modest sequential processor unit shipment decline in 2Q09.Ē

AMD gets Tesla's approval.

Still way behind, with less than a quarter of a market which really only has two major players.

Yeah, Intel had better win. I personally think they're so much better than AMD.

I prefer AMD myself. Intel is a bully. That is why they are being sued for hurting companies that went with AMD. But everyone has their own choice and we don't need to start a flame war about it. You get more for your money with AMD.

Here is one example of many:

that Intel had offered discounts to a major European PC distributor to favor its products; paid a PC maker to delay marketing a model line using AMD chips; and paid it to use Intel's own microprocessors in preference.

@Mario, so are you saying Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are bullies? It's how businesses work. They pay companies to do stuff for them and stop working for another company. Example: Exclusive 3rd party games wouldn't be exclusive if a company didn't pay for it to only be on one system.

I might just prefer Intel since I have always used their stuff. My family won't use AMD because the literally hate AMD.

Actually Sony and Nintendo don't pay for exclusives at all. Microsoft does and that's why they get the Fallout and GTA DLC that's currently out. And I have no idea what Intel and AMD are anyways so I can't really comment on the matter...
