Nintendo makes profit, Sony records first loss in 14 years

Nintendo has announced that it has made an annual profit of 279.1 billion yen, which exchanges to approx. 2.91 bilion $US. This is despite a strong yen that has caused other exporters, including Sony, who posted their first annual loss since 1995, to lose billions of yen and in turn, billions of dollars.

Nintendo's ability to weather a recession is attributed to the fastest selling console in history, the Wii, who has recently sold over 50 million units. The Wii's "appeal to the other 2/3rds of the pie" strategy has seen the console make millions, despite lackluster titles being released last year. Sony, who is widely regarded to have the best releases of the 3 consoles last year, however, has posted a loss of approx. 1.04 billion $US. The company is also down 18% on console sales, due mostly to the steady decline in the popularity of the PS2 and PSP, who both recorded heavy losses in sales. The PS3, however, has started to sell more, and is overcoming the strong yen by having a large Japanese fanbase. The PS3 is the only console to outsell the Wii in any territory, but this is mostly attributed to the demo of Final Fantasy 13. Many analysts exoect the Wii to reacquire its dominance later this year.

Also, the DSi, which sold out quicky in Japan, is adding to the quickly-etending lead in market share against the PSP.

I agree... But first I'm gonna make a constructive comment.

The Wii will definitely reacquire its dominance. The DSi is apparently effectively combatting the PSP, because it has most of the features of the PSP, plus some new ones. I've got a DSi, and it definitely beats the PSP.
