When did retro gaming end?

Retro gaming (I like to call it my childhood) brought to the table some of the finest tapestries of entertainment ever. And while people always say graphics aren't important and games are games at heart, look at any PS3 fanboy. What will he tell you? The PS3 has the best graphics.

For the purpose of this, retro gaming is when gaming made that shift, where games were not based on the content of their character, but the color of their skin (if you do not get this and you are an American shame on you and your family). When did we get to the point when gamin became more about graphics then gameplay.

I personally think the definitive shift was when FF7 was released.

Yeah, I hate most PS3 fanboys. I don't think I've ever met one that's truly passionate about gaming though some of my friends claim they are yet say "graphics is everything". Seriously, I even asked him if he would rather get a game kick ass graphics but no gameplay (basically walking around and just exploring) or play a game with not as good graphics like a N64 and he, honestly, said a PS3 game with kick ass graphics but no gameplay. That's just damn sad right there...
Anyhoo, I don't think I was born when graphics started to become everything. Didn't it start with the Jaguar or some atari system that had a sucky game library but good graphics? I don't know but yeah, most PS3/360 fanboys make me sad.

True Retro gaming ended with the creation regular Nintendo. The Arcade era of the 80s was retro gaming.

Watch the movie Chasing Ghosts. They do a good job explaining this.

Depends. Home consoles killed retro gaming; back in the day, arcade gaming was where it all went down. True gamers had to go out and compete for high scores in public, with quarters. That is true retro gaming. Now, however, I consider anything before the Playstation, and N64 retro gaming, simply because we're in a new era of gaming.

First your arcade (true retro), your 8-32 bit (retro enough for me) and then your 64 bit plus (modern).

Seriously, though, it ended when it came out of the arcade.

Retro gaming hasn't ended!
People world wide still play those old masterpieces. Including me!
Unless you're talking about how they no longer make these games (same kind of graphics, systems, gameplay, etc.).
If that's the case, then to me it ended when the PS1 came out (even though older systems were still producing a few games).

That is because that is all it has going for it. What it has 10 good storylined games, and 7 of those are multiplatform.

Anyway it ended with PSX. Nintendo isn't a graphic heavy developer, thus is why the First Party Nintendo games never disappoint, unless you are talking about Wii Blah Blah.

if the death of retro gaming truly is the graphics over gameplay state of mind, then FF7 is far from the culprit.

that title goes to the Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, and all of the other consoles that took place in the "bit wars."

in other words, the moment people bought felt the need to buy an updated console

however i do not believe that this was the end of retro gaming. retro gaming has no end. retro gaming will always be just that - playing old games. right now those games are anything before the 5th generation (PlayStation, N64)

Me too. They're always complaining about the Wii, and Ninntendo's products. If they don't like them, then why should they discuss them?
