Grades

Grades........

Are there any value to them?

What do the letters with their sign values; A+, A,A-, B+,B,B-, C, etc.;
mean to you?

What about; 4.0, 3.8, 3.6, 3.4, 3.0, etc. ?

Do "grades" have any value in REAL LIFE?

Let Marvman give you an example of what the hell,
he is talking about.....

Okay,
some teachers they just don't go "by the book" and determine
if you are doing well in a class based on just your quizzes, tests, mid-terms, homework, assignments, and other class based activities...
They base your performance on EFFORT and DETERMINATION,
so what if you got 1 or couple wrong on your tests, and you finish the semester with an A-, to them if you displayed excellent attendance,
participated in class discussions, and above all tried your best......
You'll get an A+/4.0; they are by far the most understanding education dispensers you'll ever come across to.

But then....
There are those "High" stuck up teachers and professors who just don't give a crap about their students (unless you kiss their ass; which Marvman really and violently hates), if you hadn't slept or got sick the night before the BIG test or quiz, and did horribly even though you gave it your freakn all........you get no mercy from that teacher/instructor......
on your graded test, you get a big fat F = Failed.
No compassion whatsoever.....
but is that how teachers/professors are supposed to deal with students?
It may be the most "professional" way to handle your classroom....
but as far as your goal of "teaching" and "motivating" students
to do better......it does not help......

For all ya all who don't know;
Marvman is persuing a BA in Primary Education,
to go along with his BA in Journalism and Nursing.
(Masters can wait)

And he came across a very unique but compelling point of view
that a former Phd Director of Education for the state of Pennsylvania;
one of his mentors at the Edu dept. have valiantly tried to implement into the school system......

No tests, No quizzes, No homework......
Just a continuous assessment of the students and how they progress day by day, not damning them if they get bad grades, but encouraging them to partake and improve themselves in various classroom prerogatives, lessons.

If you are not doing well in one curriculum,
instead of the teacher helping you fall off a cliff,
they should give you their hand, helping you get up.

ALOT of teachers across the globe do not carry themselves this way,
and choose to wreck their students dreams and ambitions due to their own personal problems or stupid pride. Displaying authoritarian power,
and rule over every student's future......

In hence, becoming Corrupt Educators.

Marvman would glady......glady trade in his 3.7 GPA average,
for a chance to be the best freakn educator he can be.

Do you agree with this point of view,
that Grades are Overated;
or do you conform with the current system that are incorporated in
the western classroom of today?
Plus how good a student are ya?

Rockn.

EDIT: Yeah, Marvman got an F for the first time in his freakn life today,
if your thinking for the reason behind the creation of this thread.....
DGAF, that's what Marvman thinks...

I agree. I know I'm fairly smart (don't wanna sound like a douche) and I've had people tell me I'm smart on several occasions, but I don't care about grades. I still pull off A's most of the time without trying, but grades are not anywhere near an accurate method of determining one's intelligence. I guess they ARE a good indication of whether or not you try in school, though.

Grades do not mean ANYTHING. We get good grades, graduate, and maybe go to college. But at the end of the day, more than half of us end up working at places like McDonalds anyway. Not many people get a great job no matter what their grades are.

Why does Marvman talk in the third person?

Who does he think he is, does he think he is THE ROCK?

Plus, grades are overrated, I agree, but they should still exist. Think of how much harder life would be without them. I know that sounds weird, but think about it.

Grades... sigh

I think my highest mark this semester was a 78.. which converts into a B+ here in Canadaland. Failed a class too.

As a teacher (secondary education, not primary) grades are important while you're in high school. They give you a good indicator of how you're doing, and in every county I've worked in, parents are able to look up their children's grades online, updated every day, so they know exactly what their kids got on every assignment.

After high school, the only time grades matter are when you're applying to college. During college, the only time grades matter are when you're trying to get into a professional program (like getting into the department of secondary education). After college, the only time grades matter is when you're applying to grad school or a job.

So...yes, grades are pretty important until you get a job.

Before you begin attacking the notion of grades, you need to conceive of a viable alternative. You can't unseat a system without providing a replacement. I don't see that here.
