Did Donkey Kong Country go Stale?

I'm Just curious. Donkey kong Country was the SNES's top selling game that was not a pack in by far. Everyone I've known has this game if they have a SNES... yet, you look at sales for DKC II, and, they were quite a bit less... Then you look at DKC 3's sales and they just plummetted. Now, DKC 3 was my favourite donkey kong country and I just can't figure out why sales went down when each new one came out.
I know DKC 2 was really challenging and that might've turned some people off from the series, I also know N64's release was near the same time as DKC 3's release but still... was DKC 3 that bad to some people?

Not entirely sure if the debate forum is the right place for this, but that's beside the point. DKC II was my favorite, DKC III is yours, and DKC apparently was the majority's favorites. It seems to go the same way with other sequels to popular games. The sequels almost never do as well as the previous installments. DKC III wasn't bad by any means, but it wasn't as good as DKC II or the original IMO. Me personally, DKC II was the hardest, and that could have been a deterrent to casual folk. The first one was no cakewalk either though, so I doubt that. There's just no real way to determine what causes declining sales. People losing interest, not a quality product, too hard, too easy, etc, and so on and so forth.

This is pretty much exactly what I would say. I think the biggest problem for DKC3 is that it didn't bring enough new material to the table in a fun way, but the fact that the N64 was already about and eating up people's gaming budget couldn't have helped.

Sequels never seem to do as well. People probably bought the original DKC just because it was such a huge leap for games at the time.

even on the VC, the most downloaded games top 20, the original is like #6 and DKC 2 is #17 or something, it's really a shame people don't try DKC 3 now because it is great.

and my biggest beef with 2 was that you had to pay to do everything even to save...

What usually stood true back then will stand true now. People prefer the original over the other two. Also, paying for everything wasn't that bad. Finding Banana Coins was easy.

I know but your coins reset when you quit, and if you have to quit playing, it's like "no no no, you can't quit until you have 2 coins...

Getting 2 coins to save the game is easy as pie. Go to the first level, get the first two you see, exit the level, and save. Takes...what? a minute? lol

I get what he's saying, though. There's really no reason to penalize people for saving and quitting.

I do too, but the effort needed to save and quit is not much. Either way, I wonder why they disappear anyways. It's just...annoying.
