Muramasa: The Demon Blade

a few people have been talking about this game on the forum, but i didn't see a topic

i didn't know about this game until recently, but as soon as i did it shot straight up to my most wanted Wii games. i'll admit the fact that it is a 2d sidescroller alone is the main reason i'm interested, but it has a beautiful art style and the gameplay looks very solid

has anyone played it?

It's sad that this game is flying so low under the radar. It's from the same people who did Princess Crown (Saturn) and Odin Sphere (PS2 - amazing game except for the lag). Zero picked it up last Friday, but didn't get a chance to play it until today. First of all, it's quite possibly the best looking 2D game ever created. Yes, seriously.

You can play with either the Wiimote & Nunchuk, GameCube, or Classic Controller. Zero found the Classic Controller to be the best option and would not even recommend the Wiimote & Nunchuk at all. Especially since there is no motion control in the game whatsoever. You also have two characters you can play through the game with: Kisuke and Momohime. Zero chose to play as Kisuke first. They say that the levels are the same for each character although boss fights and some other events are different. Keep in mind that Zero has only played through as Kisuke so far, so he can't confirm this.

Progress in the game is made by moving from one area to the next, and also doing some backtracking to unlock previously unaccessible doors (think Super Metroid or 2D Castlevania), but there are warp points. The path of exploration is very linear, but everything is so beautiful that it's honestly hard to notice.

While simple and smooth, the gameplay can get repetitious after a while because the combat isn't very deep. But again, thanks to the flashy combos and overall visual quality of the game, it's still hard for things to get too stale...and this is coming from someone who doesn't care much at all about graphics. Some of those air combos and dashes are just exhilarating to pull off. There can also be a lack of diverse enemies at some points, but at other times the balance is just right. The boss fights are epic, though. Very challenging, unique, and memorable.

It helps if you play on hard mode because it gives you better incentive to level up/upgrade. You can hack-n-slash your way through for a while, but eventually it gets harder and you have to obtain more powerful swords. Something Zero really likes about this game is the fact that you can switch between the two difficulty settings at any time. Not to mention that they also kept the original Japanese voices (there is no spoken English, only subtitles). However, there is a lot of Japanese culture in this game, and people not familiar with certain terms may find themselves somewhat lost. But that's only because the translation is very accurate. If you're into this sort of stuff, though, it just makes the game that much more enjoyable.

There is some lag in this game, too, but it's nothing like it was in Odin Sphere; just a few minor hiccups during some fights. Considering all of the great things about this game, though, one could even chalk its lag up to nitpicking. Zero's only real complaint about Muramasa is having to press up to jump. Even by the end of the game it still felt awkward.

...still though. This is the best 2D game Zero has played on a home-console this gen. And probably last gen, too.

You guys need to play it. Seriously, if you love 2D games you need to play this.

Funny thing is, I never had to jump with the control stick in smash. But yeah, cool.
