The Story: "Top Gear", Ahh, a racing series beloved to anyone who tryed it.
The game series was produced by an underdog company called "Kemco" In total, there was Six installments of top gear, the first three on the snes were plainly called top gear 1, 2 & 3000, as the general 16 bit era ended and we progressed onto 3D, the series just couldn't capture such speediness as they could on the snes, litterally play through one of the old top gears and tell me you don't feel a RUSH!
Now back to topic let's just do a quick recap of the series...
So the series went from your present day earth in top gear to 20XX in top gear 2, then, they take it all to new heights with year 3000 in space! Then, as I've said they come to the n64 with a filler. Some might totally just pull the WTF switch but really, if you're a fan of them this will still be great, it's a Speedy rally game, only not quite that speed as shown in the video above
After rally, which apparently was also released on GBA they came out with Rally II, Rally II was the same game with more speed, more tracks, more cars, duh! all of which you can expect from kemco
Now, finally we get what feels like a mixture of the original top gear series, and the rally series and it feels like a match made in heaven, "Top Gear Overdrive"
Now, let's not get off track here, this review is about Top Gear rally. What can I say about this game? It's an early N64 release with, yeah not the greatest graphics, but what are graphics? We've got a great 2 player rally racer that just goes above & beyond, who cares about graphics!
Top Gear rally may not be the longest game, It has 5 tracks (also available in mirror) with you're average season mode(Much like in wave race) where you have the abillity to unlock these 9 other tracks and 10 other cars. It's not extremely difficult, but I just want to race in and where I want to race, so I'm a cheater, I use a gameshark... Hey, I did beat it many times before when I used to rent it.
The game features modes like Season, Arcade, Time trials, Practice & Paintshop. So it has the usual same old same old. It also features customizable suspension tires and weather.
we'll get to paintshop in the next paragraph.
The game featured a paintshop mode where you can paint a car, this design does apply to all cars, you just have to load it. The paint design is pretty intricate and features most of the tools you could desire
it lets you edit piece by piece, each section of the car, it's pretty sweet, But 63 blocks leaves you questioning.
The thing I truly find dissapointing is the fact that after overdrive, the company seemingly dissapeared... but I've checked, KEMCO is still around but, no top gears???
Time to our final segment, the sound. Well, this game has always brought great music and I could not say an old racing series has a better sountrack than top gear, KEMCO =
here is an example of music:
Overall, all I can give this game is a big thumbs up, it is just great, please enjoy my review and please, please, feel free to comment!
