Well, I was really bored tonight and didn't feel like doing anything, except I wanted to play TS3, SSX Tricky & Counter Strike. I figured, what do I have to lose, the Xbox is just sitting there on display not usable...
I went to youtube and searched "Xbox disc read fix" or something, found a tutorial, searched for tools I needed, Allen wrench, Screwdriver, magnet... I've got to tell ya, Microsoft really did not want you opening it, They first off, made it allen key screws, they hid the screws under the 4 rubber grip... thingies and stickers! jeez! so after finding all that, opened the sucker up and yellow-ish dust flew out. I had a suspicion that my old dog had peed on the Xbox... yuck!
After taking a rag to the loads of dust in the console, I followed the next step and found yet a different screw to reach deep, deep down into a hole to remove 2 screws, Needed a magnet here.
I unplugged the two wires attached to the disc drive and then had to unscrew two more screws... Opened the disc drive up... The lens reader was in a pool of dust... you'll never guess what color the lens was... yellow...
I cleaned out all of the dust... again and took a Q-tip to the lens... it came out blue... umm...
After all that, I slapped everthing back together carefully and fired it up... first thing I got was the disc read error... opened it and closed it, it fired up and no lag whatsoever, I then tried a really dirty and scratched up disc, it worked perfect
Yeah, I'm quite proud... I'm not sying xbox is retro, but some of those games I played so much that they are classic to me... this is the xbox original that we got in like 03'
I had to open it up a second time and use rubbing alcohol, fixed 6 of my games so far, still missing about 10-20 games... and most work fine and the xbox seems to be holding out
