Nintendo64 Care FAQ

After I wrote that one for the NES earlier, I decided to just make one for all systems. I am very picky about my systems and like to keep them in the ebst shape I possibly can, and I'm sure others do too.

Caring for the System

The Nintendo 64 is not a hard system to keep clean. Other than wiping the dust off, there isn't much to do to the console(or the "control deck" as it is officially called). The N64 doesn't seem to have the pin connector problem that plagues most NES systems, so no need to worry about that.

Caring for Cartridges

The Nintendo 64 actually has a self cleaning cartridge system! How cool is that? if a game won't work, before you clean it, just insert and remove it into the control deck about 10 times and try again. When you insert and remove a cartridge, it helps to clean it. why didn't Nintendo do this before the N64?! If it still won't work, conjure up a solution of 50% alcohol and 50% water. Dip a q-tip into the solution and gently scrub the copper pins on the bottom of the cartridge.

Caring for Controllers

The N64 controller is prone to getting a dust like residue around the bottom of the control stick. This can come from things like excessive pressure, especially if that is also included with rotating the stick. You may think that it is little bits of plastic from the stick, but it's actually a powder lubricant that is between the cupped bottom of the control stick and the ball on which it rotates. It just gets out somehow. Also, it's a good idea to keep the controller out of reach of pets. My friend lost 2 controllers to his dog, Mandy, who mistook the control sticks for a toy.

Hope this is helpful somehow.

All 3 of my N64 controller's control sticks stopped working because the stuff under the control stick all dissapeared.

I'm not sure what you're talking about by "stuff under the control stick," but if you need to replace the sticks themselves, it's actually not hard to do. You just open the controller and pop the new sticks right in.

Yeah, General, op is right. Not a very difficult procedure, but to take them apart, you will need a tri-head screw driver. They can be bought for around 5 dollars.

The control stick is fine, and I have taken apart the the controller already to look at it. There's a rubbery thing that goes under the control stick that keeps it stiff but now all the control sticks are loose because it disintegrated.

By taking the console apart, and thoroughly cleaning out the insides. Shouldn't take much, but I haven't SEEN the "cobwebs" .

Since I found a dead spider in there, i'm guessing it's spiderweb. There is'nt much of it in there, and it dosen't affect gameplay, so yeah.
