Can you really have more than one "best" friend
I probably have two sets of friends. My "best" friends and my "backup" friends. Is it true that you can have more than one "best" friend and is it fair to have "backup" friends?

but having said that.........the amount of genuinely "best" friends
a person normally acquires over a lifetime can be counted on one hand.
Less than 5.
You will meet and most likely have friends whom are more of
"acquaintances" rather than being "good" or "best friends".
Marvman has theorized and summarized friendship and comradeship
into three categories....
1) Acquaintances - People who know you by face/name/class/race/sex,
you know them, but that's as far as it goes. These kind of friends
tend to be plastic, or insincere, ask you to pay the tab, or just hang or talk to you cause of who you are. Level of trust in these circles is low,
and these kinda friends are unreliable, unless you get to know them more
and their personalities, thus upgrading them to the second tier of "good"
2) Good Friends - Friends whom you know a major amount about and vice versa. These kinda people whom you can trust and give a certain amount of responsibility a majority of the time. "Good" Friends are Good to have,
and it is said, a person can be judged by the amount of "Good Friends" he/she has. Most people will have in their lifetime more than 20 good friends, this tier is a majority circle. Level of trust in these circles is good, but has it's moments of ineptness.
3) Best Friends - The highest tier a non-GF or BF can achieve in your circle of friends. Friends like these, are hard to come by. And it is a level of friendship, not alot of people can achieve with certain individuals. Elevating a friend to this kind of status, needs some sort of hardship, challenge or similar problems by both parties in order for such a level of friendship to be acheived. Knowing the limits of your friend, everything about their personality, what makes them tick, and the kind of behaviors and responsiblities they display is what usually transpires here. A majority of girl friends/boy friends have gone through the "best friends" phase,
and alot of the people who attend a marriage ceremony are strictly best friends. Those of whom are close to you, that you can trust them with your life, and they would seldom let you down. Through thick and thin,
they are right by your side, following you from the outer reaches of hell
to the gates of heaven. These particular set of friends are extremely rare.
But these kind of friendships last a lifetime.
There ya have it......
Marvman's diagnosis and analyzation of friendship.
This should answer this thread.

I currently have two best friends. It's been like that since high school, so for about eight years now. I have a different relationship with each friend. One is a friend I've known since my early childhood and the other is one I met in high school and formed a strong bond with. And both of my best friends are also best friends with each other. It can be done, you just need to learn how to keep it balanced.

I guess it depends on the type of person you are. Some people don't feel the need to have more than one best friend, or even have any "best" friends at all. Just friends. Equal in stature. But others with higher social requirements like to surround themselves with as many friends as they can. Besides, you'll know when you have a "best" friend, because your need for any "backup" friends will disappear.
