The Grand List of Console Role Playing Cliches

I now present to you the Grand List of Console Role Playing Game Cliches!
http://project-apollo.net/text/rpg.html

Some thing interesting I found, pretty much a list of ideas and story concepts used in almost every RPG(most notably JRPG's). Surprisingly accurate as well.

I thought we could discuss on these to see if they are true or not, starting with:

1.Sleepyhead Rule
The teenaged male lead will begin the first day of the game by oversleeping, being woken up by his mother, and being reminded that he's slept in so late he missed meeting his girlfriend.

Do you think this is true?

That sounds suspiciously like Chrono Cross. I've only played a few RPGs where this has happened though.

Hmmm.... seems true enough though. Im sure I can find a contradiction with a little research.

EDIT: I believe that in Spirit tracks Link may be a teenager, he recieves his conductors licence or something (most licences are given for the first time in teenage years, especially in mythology) and he is awakened by his male roomate and is late to meet his boss.

Wow, thats pretty accurate. I only had time to read up to 35, but all seemed true, even with my limited RPG experiance.

Also, rules 2, 3, 10, 13, and 19 (as far as I read) can all be contradicted by the first Baiten Kaitos, a largely underappreciated and unconventional card-based RPG. The story is rediculous too, the main character turns out to be a horrible person. Not a spoiler, you know from the begining.

The Zelda franchise doesn't consist of any RPGs.

I stopped playing that game about 3/4 of the way through. I got bored and then started playing other games, and I always meant to go back to it, but it never happened. I guess I'll give it a go once more soon, though.

Zelda is actualy considered an action RPG in many respects. Mainly by its growth system, hearts, magic meter, items, etc.

It's not an "action RPG." It is an Action/Adventure game. Mind you, Metroid and RE4 have growth systems, weapons you can upgrade, health meters you can increase, etc. Why aren't those considered RPGs, then?

The only reason people get confused is because Zelda is in the fantasy genre and people, for whatever reason, tend to think Fantasy=RPG. It doesn't.

Well growth systems are technically RPG elements, and if something that is spread throughout the game and is constantly used then they are considered partially of that genre. Metroid and RE4 both have RPG elements used in that fashion and are technically categorized as RPGs, however slightly.
