Best vs Favorite

there is, in fact, a difference. some guys in the worst movie thread suggested this be made. it's simple: name what you consider to be the best movie(s) you've ever seen, and then your favorites

ill start. this will be limited to American films, so most people on here will know what im talking about

Best:

this is admittedly pretty boring. i know it's the same as AFI's top 3, but what can i say? these movies are well-known and regarded by audiences and critics everywhere, because they're really that damn good. they mix artistry with entertainment (or accessibility) perfectly. people will be moved by these for years and years to come - cinema really doesn't get any better. in all these cases there are no doubt those people who have been built up by hype and then disappointed because the films did not meet their expectations. to them i have to say: watch them until you like them. before long, you will. i promise

don't bring up City Lights or Birth of a Nation or any of that. no one reads anymore

Citizen Kane - the American Dream in 2 hours. often hailed as the greatest ever. Not without reason, but I dislike such hyperbole. it only breeds unfair expectations. the one thing i can say about Kane to people who haven't seen it: don't be afraid. tt's not some weird, overly abstract and hard to understand "high art" piece. It's terrific; as fun and exciting as any other movie. Not to mention revolutionary and a work of utter genius. :P

Casablanca - the timeless romance. Like the song goes:

"It's still the same old story
a fight for love and glory
a case of do or die.

The world will always welcome lovers
as time goes by"

The Godfather - a beautiful and tragic portrait of family. pure classicism. every frame, every line. probably the best final shot in motion picture history. good God, the final shot. the blackness of the door filling the screen, erasing Kay into obsolescence. enter credits. and the music! my favorite shot: Vito peering out the blinds in search of Michael at the wedding. my favorite quote: "But you're not like him, Michael. I thought you weren't going to become a man like your father." Heartwrenching.

i'm really tempted to put North by Northwest (or Vertigo, or Rear Window) on here but.............. idk. i'll think about it. Hitchcock is too good

Favorites:

this list is always in constant flux for me, so i'll put the one's that have been on my mind lately

Lethal Weapon - probably the most rewatchable movie ever.

Once Upon a Time in the West - this would have been in the "Best" category, but im not sure if it counts as an American film. whatever. amazing film. a tribute to both the western genre and the myth of the old west. "An ancient race."

The Fly - a terrifying and heartbreaking chronicle of a person's deterioration

My Dinner With Andre - two friends have dinner together after years of no contact. two hours of two guys talking, and nothing more. but don't be fooled, such a wide range of topic and emotions could only ever exist in a simple conversation. "I could always live in my art, but never in my life"

anyway, there's mine. share your own, AND GIVE GOOD REASONS

My favorite film is probably Back to the Future. (at least one of them but I can't figure out the true tops)

The best film...... is Avatar by far (sarcasm)

It's actually I would say Cast Away.

Not all Pixar films were great. After Meet The Robinsons, they started getting boring to me. Except for Toy Story 3, which I am excited for although it does not look quite as good as 1 and 2.

Oh yes, which reminds me I add Toy Story 1 and 2 to my favorites list. My first movies ever.
