Just installed an OS called "Puppy Linux."

Well for a while now I've been curious to see what the new Linux OS's are like, I remembered how much I liked Red Hat, so I thought I'd give this a try. I mean it is free!

Conveniently I have this old Gateway computer running Windows 98 lying around, and I was definitely not using it. I realized that if anything wrong were to happen while Puppy Linux was installing, it would be no big loss.

After I downloaded the OS, I burned it to a CD, and then tried to load it up. I guess I installed the wrong OS, or I didn't know how to boot it up correctly, cuz' it wouldn't work. The next day when I woke up, the computer was acting all funny. While Windows was booting up, it would not detect the mouse that was plugged in (which worked before), then it gave me the usual message that Mcaffe or something like that wasn't installed, no biggie, I hit the enter key to continue, but it did nothing. While once again I boot it up, go to the setup menu, and set the boot to default in case I changed something well I was trying to install Puppy Linux. After I did that it still didn't work. So I found another keyboard and switched off the mouse on my other old computer. For some reason after that things were working, most likely because I changed something before I did that (Can't remember).

Next I guessed I had installed the wrong kind of ISO file, so I looked around their forums for a guide, at last I found one. It said to download "Puppy-3.01-seamonkey.ISO

I fooled around with the setup options for the Gateway, and tried the "removable devices" option. It named the disk that I had in the computer, so I moved it to the top of the list, pressed enter, saved changes, and it worked!

So far from what I've seen it's really cool, it's got a lot of office programs my other computers didn't have, that I wanted. A downside is I can't hook it up to the internet, because my modem doesn't have a phone jack. But I knew I could now try it on the other computer (which is connected to the internet).

EDIT: I solved the problem. I just downloaded the newest version of Puppy, and now everything works fine.
I will post screens of it in action eventually.

If this a Linux program, or simply a hack of a Linuz based OS. Only thing I've ever used from them was ubuntu, and it was okay. I didn't quite understand all of what you said, but it sounded wierd.

Ooh! I use Puppy too! i had a few old computers laying around, so I put Puppy on them (just with the boot disc) and I got them onto the internet and everything. Unfortunately I was limited by only having 64mb of RAM in each PC, so that made it a lot harder to play around.

But anyway, if anyone has an old PC they wish to revive, this is the way to go, and its so simple.

Puppy is just one of the many Linux distros out there. But can be considered better than Ubuntu because it works so well on older computers, and includes some cool stuff with it.

Also yeah, my thread is a bit confusing. I'm a bit bad at describing things in such detail. Lol.
