Achievements and trophies are useless

Why is that these so called "hardcore" people wants a lot of trophies in their games? You clear a challenge and get a reward. Thing is, these kind of challenges has existed since eternity.

Why do you need a reward for completing a difficult task in a game? Should the challenge in itself be the reward? Because if you only play to get that trophy to show off to your friends, you're not really playing for fun, but rather because there's a goal you want to reach. I think that is wrong. Do you?

It's like playing through Chrono Trigger for the tenth time only because you want to see all the endings. You're not playing because it's fun. You just want to see something at the end of the journey.

Nintendo doesn't seem very keen to include these kind of achievements in their games. Do they really need to follow Microsoft on this, or could it actually be good that they're letting the player decide which challenge is worth completing?

Achievements are bascially challenges with rewards. What's wrong with just the challenge?

Or maybe you people just love getting rewarded. :-)

Zero doesn't care much for achievements. Mostly because that system just doesn't feel all that rewarding or special. It's basically just numbers and there is no real challenge to obtaining a high achievement score; you can stack that up simply by playing a lot of different games. Trophies, on the other hand, are pretty cool because you actually have something to show off (well, for the most part anyway, since the trophy system for a few games is ridiculously easy). And while Zero wouldn't consider himself a trophy whore, it is a nice feeling of accomplishment when you get that platinum trophy and everyone who sees it knows that you actually worked for it and have some gaming skills. Let's be honest here, who wouldn't want to show off a full trophy set for MegaMan 10? Also, as others have said, it really does better motivate you to get more out of the game.

It would be better if achievements were something you created yourself and sent to friends to complete.

Of course I perservere for the reward. And of course it's also for bragging rights. That's what video games are about. Yes they are for fun, but imagine this really long and epic game, and when you beat it, you just get this little screen that says "Congratulations" and that's it. No real ending. Of course there are many games like this, namely CONTRA as hard as that damn game is (although it's still the best NES game ever in my opinion).

I mean, yes I also play for the sheer satisfaction of conquering the game, and I agree that's a reward in itself...but prizes make it even more worthwhile.
