Ban the Burqa?

I don't know about you USians, but here in Australia, there's quite a debate over whether to ban the burqa or not.
For those that don't know what a burqa is, here's a picture of a woman wearing one:

Some say that all people are entitled to wear whatever they like, wheter it be religious or not. But what most don't know is that a lot of women are being forced to wear this by their husbands, and if they are seen showing a nostril, ankle or wrist, they will get beaten by them. To combat this, the Australian government (and I hear that other nations too are doing this too) are considering banning the religious garments. Do you think this is an effective solution?

Here is an article about the Australian dilema.

I have never seen a person in the USA wearing a Burque, and I live in Nebraska, which is one of the hotspots for Middle Eastern Refugees. Its because we are awesome and don't judge. I do see them wearing the Shemaghs, the typical headdress of Arab Men, and some Arab women wearing Headscarves, but most the time it doesn't cover the face, just wrapped around the face and over the hair.

The burqa is not necessarily the entire outfit, and can just be the headdress.

France just banned the Burqa I hear. I'm in favor of the ban but the French law seems to go too far and infringe on religious freedoms. It should only matter if it covers the face and makes the wearer unidentifiable. Banning head scarves and other religious garb is wrong, imo.

I hear a lot of outrage from muslims about this. Many people think they should be allowed to dress like ninjas and walk around like it's all good. I'm sorry but that just isn't fair. I can't walk down the street with a full face mask without being suspicious, for good reason. Why should they get a pass just because it's part of their culture? It's not like muslims have a great track record either, they should be the last people dressing like ninjas in public.

I actually once saw a woman wearing one of these in black while shopping at the Target....and it made me uncomfortable.

I fully agree with Dudebro above, he pretty much hit in on the head. Especially after 9/11, how can you honestly not feel suspicious or uncomfortable if you cannot even see someone's face? Especially if they look like a ninja. Not that I judge or just write them off as a terrorist, but it makes you uncomfortable still and almost makes you want to leave just in case....

I understand religion is religion, and more power to them if they were that at home, but it's not like the rest of us can really bring our religions into public. Like, when you go to a mall or school, you don't see a poster of the Ten Commandments, and that's why we're not really allowed to say "God" (except for in the pledge of alliegance, which is optional to say), or "Jesus".

Also, yeah men shouldn't be allowed to beat them for not wearing it. I don't know much of anything about that religion, but I cannot imagine any religion where it states men should beat their wives for whatever reason, and if it does, that's messed up.
