Star Man How To: Super Nintendo Online

I'm sure it's always been an interesting idea to many of us and I've been screwing around with the online enough over the weekend that I have finally found a way to perfect the emulation between people without virtually any lag. Now if you're using snes9x or zsnes and you go to the netplay thing offered it'll let you connect to a friend, that's all good and fine but what's the issue. That's right, if you are so much as a few hundred miles away from each other you have all sorts of lag (button lag, frame rate lag). Often times with this too the lag is bad enough to throw you out of sync with the other player and maybe the other player dies on your screen while they live on theirs, what happens now is the game still picks up on button input on both ends but both will be looking stupid on each others end.

I'm showing this to you guys because it's amazing and myself and a couple of other members on this site have played online with nearly no lag... I won't mention which members these were and they can mention themselves if they want but I'm not going to write down their names and line them up for a billion questions if they don't want to have to answer.

It's been a long weekend trying to figure this out but it was well worth it.

I'll tell you exactly what you need to make this run, if you don't do one or more of these things it may not work as good.

First off, you need the emulator on this site. Yes this exact emulator is what we've been using and you and the people playing online will need the exact same emulator for the best experience. You can find it on this site: http://zsnes.ipherswipsite.com/special/ This is the one I have and it was given to me by the other member I've been playing snes with. Make sure you get the one that says "Enhanced Netplay Edition" or whatever it says I don't remember. Something along those lines.

Once you have that file it's going to come up as a zipped folder or whatever so use winrar or 7zip or whatever you have to "extract files" from folder. Now you should get a regular folder and inside there'll be a bunch of stuff, don't mess with any of it except the zsnes file that has the super nintendo logo on it or whatever (four different coloured buttons logo). This will launch zsnes and you can emulate super nintendo games if you have the rom to them. This emulator will work offline too but you'll notice that you have a bunch of options at the top of the emulator. One of them is "Netplay", leave this for now and get back on the internet browser.

Next, and this is a very key part in having no lag. You'll need to get a program called "Hamachi", doesn't really matter if you have the same version of this or not but just google it and find a download for hamachi. Follow all the installation instructions, it's not hard and shouldn't take long. Extract the file if you have to again but only if it's zipped, I can't remember...

Once on hamachi you should be able to click a tab in hamachi called "Network". This all depends on who's hosting the game. If you are then go to create network. This is where it gets a bit complicated... Set your network name and password (It won't allow you to use something you haven't used before), keeping that in mind when your network is created right click it then click set access. Once on this new window turn off the password and allow everyone if you so choose. This makes it easier for your friends to connect and maybe prevents a little lag. Hamachi is set, send out your network name to your friends and let them connect to your network. Please note that when you want to have an online session make sure you only have the person you're playing online with connected to your network active. Evict anyone else for the session as it may slow down gameplay.

Now you may be wondering what hamachi is, right? Hamachi basically bypasses the online default servers themselves and connects you to the person you're playing a lot better than the emulator can and greatly reuces lag allowing you to have an online session with someone thousands of miles away without lag! Hamachi is neccesary and it's simple.

next make sure you have the exact same rom files as the other person. In example I got mine from www.coolrom.com since the other member I was playing with got his roms there. Having the exact same file is neccesary or it may not connect as I found when I tried to connect with the other member who had the same game but not the same file... the online is fussy that way but it's no big deal. (make sure you extract files from zipped game folders as well!!!)

Now you're ready to play, brin up zsnes again and make sure both you and your friend are connected to hamachi and active on yours or his/her server (whoever works better hosting). If you're hosting you just go to netplay on zsnes and go to internet and click "Start as server". This will bring up a waiting screen (DO NOT LAUNCH YOUR ROM BEFORE YOUR FRIEND CONNECTS). Now the other person has to do the same thing, but instead of clicking the act as server button he or she will have to look at hamachi beside your name and copy the numbers and decimals given into the box given and then click "connect To server" and you will both be there (make sure you both make a name for your session too, doesn't matter what it is), you will now see a little chat box and a bunch of settings below. Don't mess with any of the settings except check off the boxes that let you choose what player you are (p1, p2, etc.). If you're hosting then go to load your rom and if you both have the game file it will work easy as pie.

a few things you should know is that you can hit the esc button to pause the game for both of you and change settings. I find that you have to go to config tab then options and mess around with the allowed frame skip settings for best performance. I find that setting mine to 9 while the other player sets his/hers to 5 works best.

I also find that some computers can't have anything else running in the background or it may screw up performance... Especially instant messengers will slow things down greatly I found. So try to only have zsnes and hamachi running...

You're good now, you can now play all your favorite 2-player snes games with your friends.

if you want to play games with me I have the following games currently all files from coolrom:

Jurassic Park 2
Super Mario world
Donkey Kong country 3
Top Gear 3000
Killer Instinct

Any questions, ask below.

Edit: my hamachi server is snes9x1122334455 ( i made it when we were still using snes9x but there was too much lag in snes9x). I will evict you if you come on while I'm playing a game with someone else to prevent lag but it won't permanently stop you or nothing.

no, unfortunately not. I'll look it up, because there are certain games that are 4-8 players on the snes, one of them being top gear 3000.

do you have a 360 or skype? I prefer to be able to mic chat during game play but it's okay if you don't.

This is PERFECT!!! Me and My friend Josh were wanting to do a Let's Play before I have to move but we wanted to do it side by side.

I can think of nothing better than to connect this and have a reoccurring Secret of Mana Playthrough
