Question Question: DS vs DS Lite

I have a Wii fit and love it. I am thinking about buying the Pink DS lite. My question is - what is the different between the DS and the DS lite? I want something that I can play on airplanes and keep in my purse.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi Gkreed

The DS Lite was released more than a year after the DS, so it has quite a few upgrades built into it, even though it's essentially the same system.

- The thing most people note right off is that it's smaller. It's a lot thinner so it's much easier to tote around. I can easily stick one in most of my pockets (though that's also a good way to sit on it and break it!). Most DS Lites are made in a sleek, I-Poddish white which looks rather nice too.

- The next biggest thing about the DS Lite is its screens, which are WAY brighter and more colorful. You can choose from five different intensity settings, so you can make it bright enough to see outside or make it dim and conserve batteries. All the colors are way more colorful in the DS Lite too, while in the DS they tend to all look dull and greyish.

- Buttons are re-designed. They stand out more so they're easier to press, and some are move into different positions so they're harder to press. The harder-to-press ones are the ones you didn't want to press anyway - like the off switch in the middle of a game.

- The stylus that comes with the DS Lite is MUCH longer and thicker, so it much more closely resembles a pen than the little plastic stick you get in a regular DS. Let's put it this way - the new stylus slides in from the side along the long dimension of the DS while the old one slid in from above along the short dimension.

- Battery life is improved a bit, though this effect is lessened by the higher energy use of some of the display modes.

- The case is a 'clamshell' design which allows the thing to be almost seamless when closed. The regular DS was easy to catch things on.

- The hinge in the middle is much improved, though it didn't really break in the old one. The new one is sturdier.

- The microphone is moved to the middle instead of the bottom so it's more like you're talking to the game instead of your belly.

Pretty much all of the changes are for the better, though none of them are things you'll die without. I usually tell people to go for the DS Lite if they don't have one, but unless you're really picky there's not much of a massive need to buy a new one if you have a regular DS.

WOW! Thank you!

Can I assume that the games that work on the DS also work on the DS lite?

What accessories do I need to buy right off the bat?

Thanks!

Yes the games will work on both Nintendo DS and DS lite. You can also play Gameboy advanced games.

As for accessories, it all depends on what you want. I would go with the Headset, and Wifi usb adapter.

gamerman64 is on a distinguished road

Dont forgot they dont make slot-2 devices for the old DS any more.

And its definitely worth the upgrade to DS Lite in my opinion.

That's cool, let us know how it works. Guitar hero should be interesting on it.

Congrats!

Let's hope the people on the plane next to me enjoy it.

Couple of more questions:

how long is the battery life?
can you buy extra batteries?
does it take just regular headphones (like the kind i use in an ipod)?

Thanks! It will be here Thursday!!!!

The DS Lite comes with a full three-hour charge the battery will last fifteen to nineteen hours on the lowest brightness setting and five to eight hours on the highest brightness setting plus it all depends on the game activity. The DS Lite has a 1000mAh battery.

Yes you can replace the battery, they are around $15

Thanks! One battery will be sufficient with that kind of playing time.
