Piracy: Good or Bad?

Okay first of all, DO NOT POST ANY LINKS TO PIRACY SITES, THIS IS NOT THE PLACE FOR THAT KIND OF STUFF! Dunno about emulators, isn't that piracy in a way?

Anyways, I'll admit something. I have downloaded things illegally, but keep in mind, I've only done this twice. Also I don't have any urges to download anything again, which is definitely a good thing.

I thought this would be a suitable topic for debate, since piracy is running rampant throughout the world, so I want to know what your views are on it.

For me, I'd say it's ok only if you don't do it constantly, because it does affect (effect?) the people who make the games, movies, etc. Or at least from what I know. Plus there is a higher chance of getting caught if you do it too much. Speaking of getting caught, I am sorta paranoid, so I use an I.P blocker... Which isn't completely full proof. Honestly I wouldn't recommend piracy unless you know what you're doing. Seriously.

This is a debate, so you can argue against my views. Also I know I'm not being totally in depth, sorry!

I have done it when I'm in a pinch. I don't advocate it, but sometimes prices of computer applications and games are a bit high. I can see both sides of the debate.

Well, I download movies, music and games. BUT, I dont download them if Im going to buy them.

I read on the net that this was 'good piracy', because Im experiencing and promoting things that i wouldn't normally experience or promote.

Well actually I dont care about that, and I jsut like to get stuff for free

But if theres a CD I really want, Ill buy it jsut o I can hold it and go "Wow, look at that "

I pirate stuff almost daily. Well...it depends. When I download something along the lines of an 11gig file I'l generally give it a break just because of Comcast and their torrent throttling ways.

Regardless, the chances of you getting caught are less than that of getting struck by lightning. The RIAA uses scare tactics and they are losing more and more cases. In the case of games, I haven't seen or heard of any case involving someone who was caught downloading software illegally (other than an audit of a business, which, to me, is wrong).

Software is fair game if you aren't making money off of it. Music is fair game because I'm not going to buy it anyway. If I download stuff and I actually like it I go and buy the cd (if I really like it)

A fun fact for you:
Music pirates buy more CDs than non-pirates.

I pirate. Actually it's funny, because I was thinking about this today, that I haven't pirated anything in about 1 month, which is quite a long time for me...wait! Nevermind, I pirated Oracle of Time and Oracle of Seasons a week ago...I've had good times with those games. Piracy isn't really nesicarily(It's late and I don't want to think about how that's spelled)bad, and I'm all for getting stuff for free!

Yeah! Funk all those people who worked for years to finish and perfect their games! Who cares about their need for food, a house, and an enjoyable life!

I know you don't do it often, but just remember, some game company's need money. Except for EA.

P.S Janneke (Or mods), you can replace funk with something else if you like.

Seriously, like the bigwigs give a damn if someone steals their game when monetary loss is concerned? Sure, they get pissed because someone is stealing their product, but they will still be getting their big paycheck anyways. They do it because they don't want to look like they don't care. It's only the people on the lower end of the food-chain that experience the consequences.

Anyways...

I don't pirate stuff so much as testing it. As far as emulating, most of the newer games can't even run off emulators yet except for DS games. Any of the older ones (such as GBP, GBC) are not even available in stores, so Nintendo wouldn't be making money even if you were to buy the games. I must say, though, that I do emulate a lot of games, and I probably have about 100 between my two systems. I mostly play Pokemon and 8-but games, but I still play quite a lot. That would be the only instance where someone could claim I was pirating, because I always pay for music and movies.

Yeah, personally I don't really care if I pirate one of, say, Valves games. Now they're a great company, with great ideas... But I think to myself: I doubt they're going to go bankrupt because of me downloading one of their games. I buy, like, all of their well-known popular current games. And what? Half Life is dirt cheap nowadays (That's the only thing I downloaded from Valve).

Yet I suppose that would just give me a valid reason to buy Half Life, but meh, whatever. I guess what I should be saying is, if a lot of people download too much games, movies, etc. Then it could be a problem, but if people limit themselves, I think it would be okay.

I dunno why I just said all of this, I doubt much of it really matters. Either way, if you have better reasons for why pirating is bad or good, feel free to correct me.
