Is it okay to be selfish?

What do you think?

I personally believe it's perfectly acceptable, and in fact, I support it. I believe people's priority should be their own self-benefits and interests before others. This does not mean people shouldn't help others who cannot help themselves, but people who were careless with their money and now have nothing deserve no sympathy whatsoever. The same thing goes with people who have no intention of supporting themselves.

If someone inherited 10 million dollars, and went broke (by their own accord, no accidents involved) in five years and now are homeless, they deserve to be homeless and deserve no charity whatsoever. They had the ability to live well beyond their means, except they chose to spend their money wastefully. If I knew someone like that and saw them begging on the street, I would walk up to them, laugh, maybe point out to them how stupid they are, and walk away. I'm the guy who will give a homeless person ten dollars, and then tell them to get their act together and shape up and get help. If I smell alcohol on their breath or see them with it, they get nothing because I want to support people who will try to support themselves, not a habit.

Does that make me a bad person? No, I think it makes me an honest person. I don't hide behind the guise that I'm an altruist and that I need to help everyone who comes up to me begging to money or stuff. I don't want to help people who had the ability to help themselves and blew it because they were stupid. I don't like that I carry a negative stigma for saying things like that. It's human nature to care for yourself, except I acknowledge that fact and don't try to hide it.

Let me bring up one final point, that I absolutely despise narcissists. People who are gaudy, think everything needs to be given to them, and have no concept of charity or generosity are the bane of human existence. That last sentence may sound like a contradiction to what I've been saying - it isn't. My point is that people need not help those who can help themselves, or those who choose not to help themselves. That is very different from saying don't help anyone. I think people need to be modest with their accomplishments, and never brag about being more advantageous than another person, because that's just in bad taste.

Depends on a lot of things really. You shouldn't be a hard ass, but you shouldn't be a pushover either.

I won't say whether I think it is right or wrong, because this isn’t so black and white. But some people are completely against selfishness and live life selflessly within moderation. And I can support that.

I think you would have to be a complete imbecile to blow 10 million in only five years. Really stupid.

On the other hand though, I don't think I could sleep at night if I know this person, and he sleeps on the streets and starves to death or is killed on the streets. No, it's not your fault he ended up on the street, but in my opinion you're just as bad if you allow this person to die cold on the streets if you are aware of the issue and choose to do nothing. Even in homeless shelters, there is hardly enough to go around. It is called being the bigger person. It shows your character by choosing to help this person.

Now if he overstays his welcome and lazes about without even so much as attempting to acquire a job, then it is time you tell him to get his s**t together or he's gone. I believe in giving people a chance, but once they mess up, it's over. At least you attempted to do something in this case.
