FFS Nicktoons

Before I start, I'd like to say that I think Nickelodeon has some pretty good cartoons. Although they've canceled most of the shows I grew up watching, there are still a few I like to watch now and then.

But I started watching Dragonball Z Kai because it was on and I like DBZ, but what I saw was not Dragonball Z, it was some bastardization of something that is supposed to appeal to kids. Number one, what made Dragonball Z so appealing, at least to me, was that it was somewhat violent. The fights were over the top and the ki blasts were fun to watch, but above all it at least was a little mature.

But I'm somewhat annoyed at what Nickelodeon has done. They've essentially taken alcohol and turned it into apple juice. It's so diluted that it just seems childish, if this was the show they used to show on Toonami Dragonball Z would have sucked.

There's no blood, at all, just scratches. There's no dismemberment. For example, when Goku and Frieza are on Namek and Frieza's energy disks cut him in half, all you see is him falling down. I've watched the Japanese versions of these same episodes and they show the violence and ferocity that Dragonball Z actually is, but Nicktoons decides not to.

I understand that we're talking about Nickelodeon, a children's cartoon channel, but they're the only ones who broadcast Dragonball Z Kai (inb4 4kids). What I don't understand is why even broadcast a television show if you're going to remove the only thing that makes it interesting. You're removing half the show by simply making what is supposed to be an adult show for kids, and there's no other option of watching it except for watching the filler ridden original dub or buying the overpriced box sets.

MY RANT IS ABOUT THE FACT I CANNOT WATCH AN ABRIDGED VERSION OF A GREAT TV SERIES WITHOUT HAVING TO WEAR DIAPERS IN ORDER TO ENJOY IT. PLEASE, TELL ME ABOUT YOUR DOG.

What.....I never watched any violent shows growing up. How does violence makes a show good? Isn't the characters and the storylines suppose to be the most important thing?

@Keyman: Well most of the appeal of DBZ comes from the violent nature of the show, it's safe to say that's where most of its popularity lies not including the characters.

On another note, American companies do tend to butcher anime alot to make it more "enjoyable" for kids. Like 4kids and One Piece/Pokemon for example.

To be honest, I don't really mind the edits much, albiet, sometimes it can get a bit ridiculous, but it would be nice if they'd show it uncut at some point(or just show it on Teennick(and thus making that damn channel watchable)

It's not the violence that I enjoy, but if you've ever watched Dragonball Z you'd notice that a good portion of the fight scenes (which is a big part of the plot) end up with both characters bloody and bruised. The show is intended for a mature audience, but American television wants it to appeal to children instead of teenagers or young adults, so what you have is basically a seriously toned down version of a graphic television show.

It's like watching a gangster film that is rated R, but a kids version of the movie is shown where all references to guns, blood, cussing, violence, drugs, etc. is removed. If you've never seen the rated R version of the film you might not care, but if you did, you probably wouldn't like the kids version, especially if what appeals to you are all the things that were removed.

The thing is there is an alternative to watching it on Nickelodeon, but that alternative is buying the DVDs, which I don't want to do because they are ridiculously overpriced.

In the end I was really trying to say that I'm disappointed they censored the show so much.

Well the Internet is also a good way to find it online, but a lot of times those can be a real pain as well

For kids who weren't around when the original came out, they wouldn't care as much.
It doesn't bother me that it's censored, kids really shouldn't be influenced by violence, alcohol and the such IMO.
They're already violent and disrespectful and corrupted enough (I work with 5th graders, I know. ><'' )

I've tried watching it online, but the only episodes I can find are Nickelodeon rips from the television and not DVD rips. There's one site called Watch Dragonball Z or something like that and they have some episodes, but a couple have been removed due to "copyright infringement" so they cannot be viewed.

There are English subbed versions of the Japanese versions, but I can't read subtitles and watch the show at the same time.

I agree 100%. But Nickelodeon is the only channel that shows the series (the version they show on the CW is even more censored and changes many of the key elements of the original show.)

Also, I agree with you about how petty it is.
