3DS Snags Highest Day-One Sales of any Nintendo Portable

So, how big do you think the day-one sales were for Nintendo's newest handheld, the 3DS?

According to the Big N as reported by Gamasutra, the 3DS 'saw the highest day-one sales of any portable system in the company's history'. In short, that's pretty big.

Nintendo remained secretive on exactly how many units were sold on day-one, but said they would make first-week sales known on April 14th, as part of NPD Group's March retail report.

Launching here in the US on March 27th and in the UK on March 25th, Amazon also reported that the 3DS also eclipsed both the US and UK preorders for the Wii when it was about to launch.

The 3DS debuted with 25 launch games, including games such as Nintendo's Pilotwings Resort, Nintendogs + cats, and Capcom's Super Street Fighter IV 3D.

The final word, coming from Nintendo's statement on the figures:

Nintendo worked hard to get as much product as possible to retailers on day one to meet demand, and we will continue with these efforts moving forward. - Company statement

I'm more surprised that preorders eclipsed the Wii's preorders.

A handheld's preorders beat out a home console's preorders.

Let that sink in.

There are only 5 or 6 games being released along with the 3DS in Australia, so I'm curious to see how it does tomorrow when it is released here.

The funny thing was that I was at the store yesterday and there was 21 3DS' in stock still. I was shocked they weren't preordered into the next year.

Doesn't sound too surprising seeing as their last handheld was released in 2005. I wonder how much it has sold, though. Guess I will be waiting until April.

Not many consoles.. or many anything i've seen thats been out of stock via pre-order for a year. I'd be more shocked if it was to be honest.

I'm happy nintendo still got the attention of the casual gamers. Hopefully if OOT sells well they might bring out even more games re-masterd as a bonus they might also start to care more about the hardcore fans. Yay us.

original DS was 2004 Lukario I believe. My bros and I were all getting into the DS in 04/05 and I got mine in 2005, pretty sure they got theirs in 2004, in fact I'm almost certain...

@Gareth I was exagurating but I'm surprised there was so much 3DS' left third day it was out when pre orders were like over the limit already at most stores.

You do know that they are remaking star Fox 64 as well, bringing back Kid Icarus and making a Paper Mario in the vein of the first two titles? Nintendo has done anything but forget about their core audience. The Wii will most likely continue to be filled with shovelware and party games with the occasional reason to dust it off. I strongly beleive the 3DS will be geared towards a different audience for the most part.
