New 3DS add-on: Second analog

3DS ADDON
By Brian Ashcraft Sep 7, 2011

There’s More To Learn about Nintendo’s Ugly 3DS Add-on

It's dubbed the "3DS Kakuchou Slide Pad" or "3DS Expansion Slide Pad". It's real and it's truly an ugly product—the ugliest since the original Nintendo DS. The lackluster looks are a shame because the 3DS is so pretty. There's more than looks to this, though.
The 3DS Expansion Slide Pad is less a simple add-on and more a cradle for your 3DS. It not only adds extra buttons: The peripheral also supposedly has R1 and R2 buttons, and definitely appears to have an L2 button. There is no L1 button.
It looks like some sort of peripheral that one would grip.
Since it is a cradle, it does surround certain parts of the 3DS. It appears that the game cartridge slot is blocked by the 3DS Expansion Slide Pad, meaning that you must take the 3DS out of the Expansion Slide Pad to change games. Apparently, the wireless switch is also blocked.
The infrared and battery port are not blocked. The front headphone jack is also not blocked. The front also appears to have little slots so the 3DS' colorful power lights are viewable.
This is an ugly bit of Nintendo kit. Even though it is horrid looking, it actually might feel solid in the hand and play well. It depends on things like its design and what kind of material Nintendo used.
No matter how it looks, the the 3DS Expansion Slide Pad is surely just a stopgap on the way to a better, sleeker 3DS iteration. You thought this time was going to be different, early adopters?

Well, I suppose it's better than them making an entirely new system like the supposed rumor stated. It'll still make my 3DS look less sexy though. Bleh.

This has been confirmed by Nintendo, and they'll talk more about it.

I expect about 30 free GBA games and a voucher to claim the accessory for free for all the trouble this will cause.

I don't mind it, adds some bulk to a system that's a bit too slim in my opinion.

well despite the ugliness and the probable overpricing, I might like this for hockey games (please put some on 3ds ) and FPS'.

So glad it's not a new model already following in the Ds' footsteps of making a million models making me feel outdated.

This just in. The peripheral is to go with Capcom's new game that was revealed yesterday, Monster Hunter 3G.

So some games will support (or require) this add-on for gameplay, whereas others won't?
Nintendo has had a very poor planning system for the past few years, and it seems it isn't getting any better any time soon.
It's disappointing, and makes consumers feel that they have bought a half-finished product. Just more proof that the 3DS was out too soon.

Incidentally, there have been rumors and reports that Nintendo plans to release a new model of the 3DS accommodating the second slide pad. So for the early adopters, we get this attachment.

If this is Nintendo's own peripheral, then making this an optional accessory shows how much they've waffled on everything considering the 3DS.

So I guess my answer is, I don't know; I hope not.

This is the year where it came all to a head, and it showed people that their planning was horrid. And that's with software and hardware. The Wii U announcement caused Nintendo's stock to drop. I'm not trying to be Negative Norbert, but I have a feeling if and when this accessory gets confirmed, stocks will drop further.

This has been Nintendo's worst year. Hopefully next year will be somewhat better.

100% agree. I wasn't upset that the price decrease happened, and I was tickled to death to know that Nintendo was planning to accommodate for the early adopters. With this second slide pad accessory, yes, I agree, I feel like I bought a prototype.

I can't really be blameless here, though. Early adopters take the biggest risks when buying a new product. However, this whole thing has left a bit of a weird taste in my mouth when it comes to Nintendo.
