Eiji Aonuma Never beat the original Zelda

Zelda Boss Eiji Aonuma Has Never Completed The Original Legend Of Zelda

Legendary game creator Eiji Aonuma has been producing and directing Zelda ever since the N64 classic Ocarina of Time. Despite this pedigree, would you believe that he never much cared for the game that kicked off the whole series? It's true.
I spoke to Aonuma extensively for the Skyward Sword cover story in our upcoming October issue. Luckily, I was able to devote some of that time to looking back on older Zelda titles, but I got an answer I wasn't expecting when I asked Aonuma for his thoughts on the original Legend of Zelda on NES.
"Iíve never actually finished it," Aonuma told me. He elaborated:
"I almost feel like thereís still no game more difficult than it. Every time I try to play it I end up getting 'Game Over' a few too many times and giving up partway through. Certainly after playing the original Zelda for the first time, I didnít ever think that I wanted to make a game like that."
If the thought of a world without Aonuma-directed Zelda games sounds frightening to you, you owe your thanks to A Link to the Past, the Zelda iteration released for Super Nintendo. "That sense of exploration of the world itself was really where I latched on to the series," Aonuma explained. A Link to the Past was a strong influence on Marvelous, the first game that Aonuma directed. That title got him noticed by Miyamoto, which led to Aonuma joining the Zelda team.
Keep your eyes peeled to our Zelda hub page for more Skyward Sword and Zelda 25th anniversary features throughout the month.

That makes two of us(myself included)

Anyone else never finished the game? Does everyone on the f***ing internet need to be making such a big deal about this?

Yes! This is a big ****ing deal! It only shows the ineptitude of Aonuma, Miyamoto, Reggie, and Iwata!! They all must never touch the Zelda series again, and they must be fired immediately!

Seriously, though, the game is one of the hardest Nintendo-produced NES game, if not the hardest. I think the exploration helped in it some, which I'm glad future Zelda titles adopted said exploration in the games.

And no, I don't think Aonuma-san should be judged harshly for not completing LoZ. It is truly an aggravating game. And seriously, can you blame a man for his honesty? He could've been a total dick and told the interviewer off.

I'd be willing to bet half the creators of the games we have nowadays can't/haven't beaten their games. No big deal.

There are times when this game is unfair.

For instance, in Dungeon 5, I faced off with three Dodongos and I had no bombs. I scoured the dungeon and the area around the dungeon on the overworld for bomb drops. I had no Rupees.

Then, when I finally get the bombs and beat the Dodongos, I traverse a couple of rooms and face not one room, but two rooms with about maybe 6-8 Blue Darknuts. These Darknuts are faster and stronger than the regular Red Darknuts. Note that no type of Darknuts move in a set pattern, just in random patterns throughout the room, so it's hard to predict their movements, especially when there's 6-8 of them.

I died and had to go through the Dodongos over again.

That's not trial and error; that's cruel and unusual punishment.

You could say it's my modern gamer sense telling me that I need to have my hand held while I go through the temple. I don't think it's that, considering that, even if you don't have the patience, you could always save and try again.

Bobby Kotick doesn't even play the shit he makes, so what's the big deal? I haven't even played the original Zelda, so that makes n+1 of us.

I don't get why this is a big deal. I can understand why this might make gaming news when he took the helm of Zelda back in the Ocarina days, but now? Who cares?
"He never much cared for the game that kicked off the whole series" is a huge statement that isn't properly justified by this article. Who's to say he didn't like it?

I never finished it either. I thought it was boring compared to games like Wind Waker & LTTP. Like AotA said though, just because he didn't complete it, doesn't mean he didn't like it.
