Even 40-odd years after the nuclear war and despite the earnest cleanup efforts mobilized by AEGIS, the Earth of Hexagon Death Squad is still a largely depauperate and contaminated world. Here are some statistics.
10% of the world's formerly-habitable land area is still highly contaminated with dangerous radiation and unsuitable for human life.
15% is rated "contaminated" for continuous habitation, with elevated levels of radiation and heavy metal contamination around 60 times normal.
10% is rated "unsafe". Humans living in these areas are advised to take antiradiogenic medications and supplements and wear thick clothing when working outside.
60% is rated "safe". Most of the remaining 1.3 billion population lives in such areas. Radiation levels are at a minimum, though water filtration is mandatory and most dwellings have dust filtration systems. Radiation levels are elevated to about 2-5 times normal.
5% is "uncontaminated". These are mainly pristine forested areas near the equator and in the southern hemisphere, as most of the worst effects of the nuclear war were felt in the Northern hemisphere. Radiation levels here are on par with our own.
Huh... So that's interesting.
