Smilie Waluigi Gameboy Game Deterioration

I'm going to buy a Gameboy Color, but when I do, I want to know that everything will work for years to come. I've heard that from general use over a substantial period of time, the games can lose their ability to save data, or can simply deteriorate.
Is this true? Can I buy a Pokemon game on Ebay and then discover it can't save after a few months of playing it? Will all GameBoy games' quality deteriorate over time, regardless of their condition?

from what i've read over time is that for pokemon games back then, there was just a battery that was always on allowing it to save or something like that. I guess also how it kept track of the time n stuff on silver/gold. You can always replace the battery if you really want to.

i dunno about if all gameboy games work like that, but I doubt it :X

Yeah my copy of Gold for GBC doesn't save anymore. I don't know why. I have to start over again every time so it's become pretty pointless.

Most older games do deteriorate over time due to the aforementioned battery issue, heck even some GBA games do too. I don't think it's very costly to replace the battery if it happens though.

Yes, like any cartridge system, that can be an issue. If a game ceases to save, however, it simply means the save battery is dead. You can open it, buy a new save battery, and put it in with relative ease.

Zapdos is an unknown quantity at this point

These people have said it. The batteries can just die out over time, and that's why they don't save any more.

Yes. I recommend buying this thing where you can keep all your saved files backed up in case something happens. Usually, you need to replace the battery inside a Pokemon game for GB and GBC (I know how if you need any help C: )
