What makes someone a gamer?

It seems like a simple question, but you'd be surprised at how divided people are. What IS a gamer? What is a gamer TO YOU? What makes YOU a gamer? Is it as simple as anyone who so much as picks up a controller, or does it go deeper than that?

I don't find that to be true, but care to elaborate a little?

Well to me, I don't think there is a definite concrete way to define oneself as a gamer, that is up to the individual. Most people who play games for a hobby see themselves as a gamer, but I think there's a deeper meaning behind it.

I'm actually writing an essay pertaining to this for English, so it would be interesting to see a few responses.

If someone refuses to play a game purely because Nintendo have developed it they can't call themselves a gamer. At least I don't believe they can.

Ok, Here It Goes

Quote:
gam·er/ˈgāmər/
Noun: A person who plays a game or games, typically a participant in a computer or role-playing game.
- Google

Broad, isn't it? My Xbox-loving friends would classify themselves under "MMO Hardcore" Gamers, while I have some friends who are just "Casual" ones and a very few who are "n00bs". Who's to say that there's only casual, pro, and hardcore gamers out there? I don't classify myself as either of those, at least according to this article I'm not.

This article was MUCH more interesting, and pretty funny

Anyways, I've always been and forever will be a fanboy. Compared to my childhood, I don't play as much as I used to. Usually, I'd spend like 6-8 hours a day in front of the TV, playing until I got yelled at or had to sleep. It's much harder now. What with school, life and the career path I chose, a lot of people have told me to put the games away and to grow up. The thing is, even as an actor I feel like I'll always have time for a game here and there =)
I guess I don't always show that I'm a gamer, but I love identifying myself with everything and everything that's Nintendo. It's characteristic all of my friends recognize as well. Here's some fast facts about me and gaming at-a-glance:

- I could really care less about the visual quality. If it's a series that I love, then I'll love the game no matter what it looks like. But hey...if it looks AWESOME, then it's just another perk in my opinion :3

- Accessories (Clothes, messenger bags, glasses, caps, wristbands, socks, clips, etc.) make me a happy person.

- The legacy of a game or its company is one of the many things I cherish.

- I'm not into the whole "1st Person" perspective, or massive multiplayer games.

So I guess I'm a unique type of gamer.

what Rai said.
Also what princes konata said is very true.
You dont have to be picky about a game. you wont judge the game by the maker or the console is for. That including you wont mind helping anyone in need and havin accesories will make you happy because you feel identified with thm. That way you will be a gamer.....and of course play games.

........I will be thinking of 10 comandments for the gamer

Hardcore gamer, casual gamer. Neither of those titles make sense any more.
A gamer is solely someone who closely identifies themselves with video games. Genre, console, era or any other factor is irrelevant......
