Impromptu vs. Extemporaneous: Which is harder?

Okay, so for those of you that have never been on a Speech and Debate team, Impromptu is a speech where you have 30 seconds prep time to get ready to give a 5 minute speech about pretty much any random topic that is not current event related, you will pick from 3 random topics at the beginning.

Extemporaneous is 30 minute prep time to research and memorize a 10 minute speech on current events, 3 random current events at the beginning.

Personally, I think extemp is way harder because it is current events and most competitors come with huge buckets full of research material and have to research everything before hand and memorize all of it. Some topics for extemp would include: Obamacare, Trayvon Martin, etc. Impromptu gives topics such as "Green" or "Corn" both of which would be easy to talk about in an organized structure for 5 minutes. What are your opinions on these 2 gruesome speech events?

Heh, yeah. Hopefully I will be back for a while this time. It was really sad, I posted from my PSP that my old PSP got stolen and less than a week later, that one got stolen as well along with my laptop =/ Something tells me it was an inside job... I found an old laptop lying around though, so I put a new hard drive in and upgraded that RAM and it is running quite nicely right now.

Why is that though? You have more time. I never understood how that worked really. I guess because if you say something that is inaccurate, you look dumb... but if you say it convincingly, you can fool the judges.

I've found that extemporaneous speaking can be worse, as you are no longer relying on your own knowledge but rather how well you memorized someone else's.

^Pretty much that.
You hesitate more because you don't really know what you're talking about. You just have to memorise facts and figures and pretend you do.

Well if your are up-to-date on current events, which you should be if you are doing this event, then it is actually really easy. My first time, I showed up 25 minutes in to the research period, grabbed my topic, and impromptu'd it. Even if you don't know what you are talking about, convince yourself you are and you will convince the judges.

If it's something with a lot of info, 10 minute speech would be easy. Especially if you go further into things than necessary to take up time. Oh yeah the other one is a piece of cake too.

Yeah, well like last year my topics were the NBA Lockout, "How Can The U.S Cut Foreign Oil Dependencies" and the Nuclear Treaty With Russia, all were pretty easy to speak on especially because of the huge amount of information publicly available. Like, with the oil dependency topic, I pretty much just talked about how there are other forms of fuel that we could find, but even if we did find them the government wouldn't allow us to use them unless they could tax them and so instead we decide to go to wars for oil costing us trillions of dollars and putting us further in to debt. And I just went on and on about government and stuff. It is really funny when it is a topic like that and your judges are a Democrat and a Republican...
