100 Games to Play Before You Die

Alright, let's try to reach 100 with this. Here are a few ground rules for this thread. I want you guys to take this seriously. Don't troll and be stupid.

-List only 1 game per post
-Give a reason for why it is a must play. Not just a sentence either. Give at least 1 paragraph (I'm counting 5 sentences as a paragraph) for WHY it is so great that you must play it before you die.
-Don't be biased or say things like "It's one of the greatest games ever". If it is on a list called "100 Games to Play Before You Die", isn't that part already assumed?
-Also avoid saying things such as "you can't call yourself a gamer unless you've played this", etc. It's not true and just makes you look bad.
-Make note of what systems the game is available for. If there are version differences, make it clear which one you are referring to.
-If one game in a series has been listed already, think long and hard before posting another game in that series. Every single game in a series which has 10 entries is not a must play.

I'll start us off with something kind of obvious.

1. Earthbound (SNES)
Earthbound is a unique RPG from Nintendo in which you play as a small boy trying to rescue his home from an alien invasion. The second game in the "Mother" series as it is called in Japan, Earthbound developed a huge cult following in America, and elsewhere. This game is quirky to the core, from the enemies to the music....just about everything in this game is odd. Interest in the game was rekindled when Ness, the main character, appeared in the Super Smash Bros. games. Earthbound has become the very definition of gaming collectible, and unless you emulate it you're going to have to dish out some serious dough to play this game.

2.F-Zero GX

As far as racers go, I cannot think of a more intense racer. To say that F-Zero specializes in speed is quite the understatement; Try the speed of sound! The sense of speed stems from the wonderfully detailed tracks which has objects zooming past you at blistering speed. Aside from that, the track designs are very bold and the challenge is there for more hardcore players. It's hard to believe Nintendo produced such a game. But I digress, the GameCube installment of F-Zero is a must play for racing fanatics like myself. Especially for those into Futuristic racing. And with a GameStop price tag of $4.99, it is the best thing to spend five bucks on since Hot-N-Ready's.

3. Megaman X(SNES/GC/PS2/Wii)

A fast-paced action platformer by Capcom set after an unknown amount of years after the original series. It reinvigorated the iconic franchise with a new protagonist and several new gameplay features such as wall kicking and armor parts, allowing you to use the terrain in your favor in a fight. It's also known for it's high difficulty, but the sense of progression is still there when later in the game you find yourself plowing through enemies with weapons taken from the 8 bosses. And the music is also worth noting, for it makes great use of the SNES's capabilities and makes some really pumping tracks, not to mention fitting for when you feel the atmosphere changing as you progress further into the game. Available for $8 on the VC, which is a great deal and highly recommended, especially for fans platformers of this calibur

4. Super Metroid (SNES/Wii Virtual Console)

This game is normally touted as one of the best games on the SNES, and that is no exaggeration. This entry in one of Nintendo's flagship franchises, Metroid, once again puts the player in control of the bounty hunter Samus Aran as she treks off on another mission. Super Metroid introduced a lot of concepts and weapons that are still staple in recent Metroid titles, not to mention the underlying story that is also pivotal to Samus' character. The graphics, sounds, and controls were pretty impressive for a game of its time, the sound especially fitting to set the dark atmosphere of the game. If you have an SNES or Wii and do not have this game, go get it. Now. Besides, it's pretty fun blasting aliens to smithereens with a cannon.

Looking good so far.

5.Metal Gear Solid/Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes(ps1/Gamecube)

Metal Gear Solid is a Playstation game from the mind of Hideo Kojima. Solid snake, the main character, has effectively become both a gaming and pop culture icon - not to mention the epitome of awesome. The game's unique approach to the action genre has been copied numerous times, bur regardless of how many stealth games they make MGS is still unparalleled. It not only created the stealth sub-genre, it perfected it. If redone voice acting doesn't bother you, the Gamecube remake "Metal Gear Solid: the Twin Snakes" updates the graphics tremendously, adds gameplay elements from "Metal Gear Solid 2" and adds some new cutscenes. If you're a hardcore traditionalist however, you still can't go wrong with the PS1 original, which can be found on disc relatively cheap or purchased from the Playstation Network for about $10.

6. Paper Mario (Nintendo 64)

Besides Mario being a classic gaming icon, this game is beautiful for it's time. The scenery is well done, and the characters are all quirky and funny. This game takes you on a story book tour through the Mushroom Kingdom as Mario (as always) tries to save Princess Peach from Bowser. This time, he built a castle under hers and lifted it into the sky by stealing the magical Star Rod from Star Haven, a device used by the Stars to grant wishes! To save her, and the Star Rod, Mario has to rescue each of the 7 Star Spirits being held captive by Bowser's underlings all over the world. However, Mario isn't alone! He gains allies along the way, each with a unique attack and colorful personality. This game combines action, adventure, comedy and beautiful, interesting places into one epic journey. I play through this game every year and never, ever get tired of it.

7. WarioWare: Twisted (GameBoy Advance)

As far as minigame compilations go, you would be hard pressed to find a franchise that delivers minigames as...unique as those found in the WarioWare franchise. Each game in the WarioWare franchise brings a new innovation to the table which usually corresponds with the platform that it's on; for example Touched! utilizes the DS touch screen of course and Smooth Moves crafts its games around the Wii's motion controls. Within this franchise, the most unique game in the series would probably be Twisted! for GBA. This is one of two GBA games which utilizes a sensor built in the cartidge which allows you to control the game by simply tilting your GameBoy (the other being Yoshi: Topsy Turvy). Combined with the crazy minigames that can only be found in WarioWare, this is definately the most unforgettable minigame collection you will play. If you can track down a copy, it's definately worth it.

8.The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Of the Zelda series, their are many entries which have more than their claim to fame. Ocarina of Time is often heralded as one of the greatest game of all time. I feel that A Link to the Past often gets cast into OOT's shadow. ALttP is actually far more innovative to the series than one might guess by looking at it. In fact, it standardized Zelda into the uniform game is i today. The introduction of many important items as well as many key elements that play a large role to this day, such as the Master Sword, make A Link to the Past a game that any gamer should make a point to play in their lifetime.

9. Final Fantasy Tactics(PS1/PSP)

The first Tactics game in the Final Fantasy and often seen as the spiritual successor of Tactics Ogre. It is also one of the few Final Fantasy spin-offs to receive as much praise as it. It combines Strategy with RPG elements and places battles on a 3D square field(similar to those of the Fire Emblem series), and the game returns the job class system that's been missing since FFIII, allowing you to a wide variety of customizable units. And as for the story, it's as deep and dark as they come, staying true the the medieval setting the series was known for, as well as placing plot elements that were new to the Final Fantasy series at the time. It was so successful that it was able to spawn new games, FFT:Advance and A2: Grimmoire of the Rift, both of which are also worthy of the FF name

10: Tales of Symphonia

This game has one of the best storylines an RPG could have. Also has excellent gameplay, likable characters, and just an all-around great theme. A little cartoonish, but it just makes more awesome. The great part of the gameplay is the battle system. You run around a small arena, killing enemies. Some of the bosses were very hard too. Not a pretty game with easy enemies. A pretty game with deadly tricky enemies
